Soseki Restaurant In London

Marina O'Loughlin - 3/5

Tuesday, October 07, 2008 - Soseki, twinkling seductively under the lowering armpit of the Gherkin, is perfectly lovely, one of the most beautiful new restaurants I've visited in a long time. Like many restaurants in Tokyo or Kyoto, it looks very much like any old faceless modern block from the outside but climb the open-tread stairs and you'll find magic.

Went with the full set menu with matched drinks here which was a good choice. The meal was well balanced and paced and the wine/sake/spirits worked very well indeed Sushi and sashimi was fresh with the exception of a solitary slightly dodgy piece. They didn't hesistate to serve up some of the more obscure (to London) Japanese dishes either - savoury egg custard and tongue were both great.

Not cheap but an experience.

Fantastic food, one of the best Japanese I have been to. One of the great things is not really knowing what you are going to eat. The menu changes every day depending on the freshest produce available on the day. I had five courses but you can go for twelve if you really want to let the taste buds in for a treat. The rice beer is great to wash it down as is the warm sake. If you don’t fancy poncing around the west end in Zuma or Nobu but want top quality Japanese then this is the place.

Although a little quiet on the night we went (and what new restaurant wouldn't be), Soseki is decked out beautifully inside with every detail given the attention it deserves. The embroidered fabric beneath glass table tops is a unique feature and the soft wooden tones and multi dimensional space is soothing and another world away from the drab city streets outside.

Given that the majority of diners in our party had never eaten Japanese cuisine before, we heeded the advice of our extremely polite, patient and helpful waitress and opted for a set menu showcasing the freshest food of the day.

I’m relieved we weren’t in a rush as we savoured all 11 courses (yes, 11 courses) over 3 hours. Words cannot describe how delicious the food was, however for the sake of highlighting to you why you should go, I’ll try to. The sashimi melted in your mouth and the presentation alone would be worth enjoying the dish, tempura was crisp on the outside and warm and tender on the inside, the miso soup was better even than that which I have enjoyed in Asia and the desert… all I can say is make sure you leave room for desert!!!

Whilst the menu style is a little different and perhaps a little overwhelming to Japanese cuisine newcomers, the wait staff explained each and every dish too us, including in which order to eat things on the plates for maximum enjoyment and which sauces went with which dish. And by allowing the expert chef to decide what is presented each evening, you can be assured that not only will you have the opportunity to try something perhaps you wouldn’t normally think of ordering, you know that everything will be of an exceptionally high standard.

It would be a wonderful place to go on a romantic evening given the privacy of the little booths up the back and an equally enjoyable place with a group of friends given the excitement and beauty of the food.

World Foodie Guide - 8.5/10

Saturday, August 16, 2008 - Soseki, named after Japanese novelist Natsume Soseki (who lived in London for two years at the turn of the twentieth century), is situated right next to the Gherkin. I had an incredible view of it from my table, through the huge window. A word of warning though. At lunchtime on a sunny day, it's extremely hot in the open 'booths', and there's no shade at all.
