Eaten 3 times at Le Petite Auberge and it's been a pleasure every time. Excellent food at reasonable price, good ambience and friendly staff. One of my favorites! Serving can be a bit slow - but the the price you pay for a popular place and well prepared food.

We just came back from a Sunday roast at La Petite Auberge. The service was dismissive to say the least - the most uninterested wait staff we have come across in a long time. We ordered the roast beef, the meat was tough, stringy and full of fat, the roast potatoes were tasteless. There are much better Sunday roast restaurants on Upper Street and for much better value...do yourself a favour and try those.

We visited last night, after theatre at the Old Red Lion, and arrived (with reservations) at 9:00. The place was absolutely packed but we were seated promptly. Service was prompt and friendly. My wife had the fish soup and I the wild boar pate; the servings were large and excellent. The mains were likewise excellent. The only complaint would be the excess chocolate sauce on the desert crepe. The menu and the food are what you'd actually find in a reasonably good French bistro and not some re-interpretation. Ditto for atmosphere.

quite possibly the worst experience of dining in my life. very slow service, indifferent staff. if you want to get ripped off in style then go here. macdonalds do better food and service than this place. i dont care what anyone else says, this place is the worst restaurant i've been to.

I am affraid Gaby is wrong, her knowledge about food seems to be as comprehensive as her English. La Petit Auberge is a gem, and amazing value for money.

My partner and have visited Le Petit Auberge for the first time last friday.

The idea was a romantic dinner, so I booked plenty in advance to assure we had a good table. I sope to very helpful french guy on the phone who try his best to make sure my request was fulfilled.

When we turned up, we were offered a table for 4 ( two tables put together) next to the door.

We asked for for a cosy table for two only and we were accomodated on the top floor (again two tables together later occupied from another couple).

We went for a calamari starter ( which was decent) and I chose Beef Stew with Black Olives and Mash Potatoes and my partner went for a Sirloin Steak with mushroom sauce. And a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon which was good.

The starter was quickly served, but it was mortifying waiting for our mains (25 minutes) while seeing all the other tables arrived later than us and some ordered the same mains, being served soon after their order.

Luckly my stew was good enough to make me forget about the waiting but my partner's steak was watery although it had a good mushroom sauce.

The staff was unattentive and we weren't even offered a Dessert Menu.

We left very, very disappointed.

Not sure we will come back or even reccomend this restaurant to our friends.

My friend and i stumbled upon this restaurant one rainy night when looking for a bite to eat in Angel, and had one of those rare, unexpected wonderful eveinings. The table next to us was occupied by black-clad French intellectuals only missing gauloises. The atmosphere was vibrant, and the food was delicious and reasonably priced. My freind has been back four times since, and I have just booked a large table for my birthday. I couldn't think of a better way to spend it.

I discovered this restaurant about a year ago and have gone countless times since. The food is divine, especially the steaks and the portions are large and good value for money. The staff are really friendly and the wine list is great. I would definitely recommend it.

This place used to be reasonable a few years back but it’s really gone down the pan. If you enjoy being crushed sitting at postage stamp sized tables served by indifferent staff without the faintest idea about French food then this place is for you.

A starter of snails wasn’t warm enough and the salad came without dressing. The long wait for the main courses was just as disappointing. Runner beans were just left boiled and when we asked for some mustard to accompany our steaks we were told that "they didn’t have any".

Although prices compare well to other similar French style bistros and the décor is quite pleasant, I wouldn’t recommend it.

Service was shockingly show and indifferent at best. It was a shame as the place had real potential. The restaurant is sweet and unpretentious and really does feel like a French bistro. Not quite romantic though, if only for how packed out and loud it was, and also for the fact you'll be groaning under your weight of your heart attack food. Steer clear of the galettes or anything involving cream, cheese or egg: you'll never see your arteries again. There was also more than a hint of over-microwavisation! the plate was so hot it actually burned me, and the food tasted of boiling, inedible mush. Still, there are positives! The desserts were divine, and everybody agreed that the fish and meat were top rate. Giant portions at cheapish prices too! Not everyone was a winner, but some were. That's a better ratio than some restaurants...

I'd go again now I'm better informed of the hits and misses, but only if I had all the time in the world to wait for each course...
